LinkedIn Ads Management for B2B Teams That Report on Pipeline
LinkedIn clicks cost more than most channels, so it only pays when the leads become pipeline. John Williams
runs LinkedIn Ads with CRM outcomes flowing back through the Conversions API, account lists built with sales,
and reporting that ends at opportunities, not form fills.

95-5 B2B Institute heuristic for in-market buyers
TL;DR
Signal first: the Insight Tag with enhanced conversion tracking, plus the Conversions API, deduplicated on a
shared event ID.
Lead-gen campaigns optimize toward qualified leads sent from your CRM, not raw form submissions, as soon as
volume allows.
Account-based campaigns run on company lists agreed with sales, sized above LinkedIn's minimums, and judged
on account engagement and pipeline.
Most budget builds memory with buyers who aren't in market yet. A smaller share converts the few who are.
Flat fee, quoted after an audit. Nothing is billed as a percentage of spend.
Who this is for
B2B SaaS and services companies with a defined buyer and a sales team that follows up.
Teams buying lots of cheap leads that sales won't touch.
Account-based programs that need named-account reach and a way to show it moved pipeline.
Founders and executives with an audience whose posts can run as Thought Leader Ads.
Not a fit if nobody owns lead follow-up. LinkedIn can find the right people; it can't call them back. See our
SaaS marketing work for the wider funnel.
What's included
Tracking build: Insight Tag with enhanced conversion tracking, Conversions API events from
your CRM or server, and a deduplication test.
Lead flow: Lead Gen Forms with hidden fields for campaign and ad IDs, synced to HubSpot or
Salesforce, with a test lead before launch.
Audience architecture: company lists, contact lists, retargeting, and job-attribute targeting
in separate ad sets, so each can be judged on its own.
Creative program: single image, document, video, and Thought Leader Ads, written with our
Social Media Ad Builder and refreshed on a schedule.
Pipeline reporting: spend, leads, qualified leads, opportunities, and revenue by campaign,
reconciled with the CRM each month.
How John runs LinkedIn ads
Turn on first-party tracking
With enhanced conversion tracking on, LinkedIn adds a click ID (li_fat_id) to landing page URLs
so the Insight Tag can use first-party cookies (LinkedIn Help). The cookie lasts 30 days, and LinkedIn keeps the click-to-member mapping for 365 days, so the ID still
works for Conversions API matching after the cookie expires (Enabling Click IDs). We capture it in a hidden form field for offline matching.
Add the Conversions API and deduplicate
LinkedIn recommends sending events through both the Insight Tag and the Conversions API, with a separate
conversion rule for each source. When both arrive with the same eventId, LinkedIn discards the
API event and counts the tag event (Deduplication). That's why a correct setup shows a higher Insight Tag count than API count.
Optimize to qualified leads
The qualified leads optimization goal learns from CRM outcomes sent through the Conversions API or through
CRM Sync in Business Manager. LinkedIn advises using one source, not both. The data must arrive within 30
days, and LinkedIn recommends five or more qualified leads in the two-week learning phase (Qualified leads optimization goal). We pick the earliest CRM stage sales trusts that still clears that volume.
Bid for control, then for scale
Maximum delivery spends the full budget and charges by impression. Cost cap sets a target cost per result.
Manual bidding gives the most control and needs the most supervision (bidding strategies). New programs start on cost cap. Proven ad sets move to maximum delivery when the cost per qualified lead
holds.
Report to pipeline monthly
Each month we join campaign data to CRM opportunities and revenue, and move budget to the ad sets that
produce pipeline, not the ones with the cheapest leads.
Common LinkedIn mistakes John fixes
Optimizing to form submissions forever. The algorithm learns to find form fillers.
Image pixel instead of the Insight Tag. Image pixels can't use first-party cookies, which
reduces conversion tracking accuracy.
Audience expansion left on for ABM. A named-account campaign that quietly reaches lookalikes
isn't account-based anymore.
Lead Gen Form fields that don't map. Some CRM partners don't support hidden fields or custom
checkboxes, so leads land without source data (Lead Gen Form hidden fields).
Sending CRM qualified leads through both CAPI and CRM Sync, which double counts them.
Thought Leader Ads without consent hygiene. The author must approve each sponsorship, and
posts from people outside your company need clear disclosure under the
FTC Endorsement Guides.
Account-based marketing on LinkedIn: the rules that shape the plan
Rule
What LinkedIn says
What we do about it
Company list size
At least 300 rows to upload, up to 300,000 companies, 1,000 or more recommended (company list targeting).
Tier lists by fit, and keep tier 1 big enough to serve on its own.
Matched audience minimum
An ad set needs at least 300 matched member accounts, and location is required.
Check matched counts after adding location and job filters, not before.
EEA and Switzerland
Matched Audiences only include members who opted in, so lists match smaller there.
Plan larger lists for European accounts.
List expiry
A company list expires if it isn't used in an active or draft ad set within 90 days.
Refresh lists from the CRM on a schedule.
Match accuracy
Adding each company's LinkedIn Page URL improves match rate.
Enrich the list before upload.
On budget split, the LinkedIn B2B Institute and the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute make the case that most business
buyers aren't in market at any given time. Their own examples: 75% of companies buy computers once every four
years and 80% change banks once every five (95-5 Rule). Ehrenberg-Bass calls 95% a heuristic, not a precise number. We use it to size two jobs: brand campaigns that
reach the full account list, and conversion campaigns aimed at accounts already showing intent.
To see whether the brand work is landing, we read company-level engagement for uploaded lists in Campaign
Manager's Companies Hub (under Plan, then Companies) alongside CRM data (Matched Audiences best practices). The question each quarter is simple: are more target accounts engaging, and are more of them turning into
opportunities? If engagement rises and pipeline doesn't, the problem is the offer or the follow-up, not the
targeting.
Pricing and engagement
LinkedIn management is a flat monthly fee, quoted after we've audited your Campaign Manager account, tracking,
and CRM connection. Per the pricing page, nothing at Ahmeego is billed as a percentage
of spend and there are no long contracts. A Conversions API and CRM integration can also be scoped as a one-time
project.
Platforms we work in
LinkedIn's own tools plus the CRM and tag stack behind them. Official product pages below.
Do I need the LinkedIn Conversions API if I have the Insight Tag?
LinkedIn recommends both. The Insight Tag captures browser events. The Conversions API sends events from your
server or CRM, including offline outcomes like qualified leads and closed deals. Use a shared eventId so
LinkedIn can deduplicate.
How does LinkedIn deduplicate Insight Tag and Conversions API events?
You create a conversion rule for each source and send the same eventId from the browser and the server. When
LinkedIn receives both with the same eventId, it discards the Conversions API event and counts the Insight Tag
event.
Should we use Lead Gen Forms or send people to our website?
Lead Gen Forms convert more easily because LinkedIn pre-fills them, which also means more low-intent leads.
They work well when sales follows up fast and qualified outcomes go back to LinkedIn. If sales capacity is
tight, a website form with stronger qualification may be better.
What is the qualified leads optimization goal?
A lead generation option that optimizes delivery toward people likely to become qualified leads, using
qualified-lead data you send through the Conversions API or CRM Sync. LinkedIn needs that data within 30 days
and recommends five or more qualified leads in the first two weeks.
How big does an account list need to be?
LinkedIn needs at least 300 rows to upload a company list and at least 300 matched member accounts before an
ad set can run. It recommends 1,000 or more companies. Lists for European accounts match smaller because only
opted-in members are included.
What are Thought Leader Ads?
Sponsored versions of public posts by people rather than your company Page: employees, creators, or other
members who approve the sponsorship. They tend to feel less like ads, but every sponsorship needs the
author's permission.
Why are LinkedIn leads more expensive than Meta leads?
You're paying for professional targeting by company, job function, and seniority that other platforms
don't offer. The fair comparison is cost per qualified lead or per opportunity, not cost per form fill.
