Amazon Ads PPC Management Run to Profit, Not to ACoS

Amazon will happily take more ad spend at a lower margin. John Williams manages Amazon Ads with a target for every product, bidding settings chosen on purpose, and Amazon Marketing Cloud used to answer the questions the console can't.

How John runs Amazon Ads

Set a target per product

Amazon defines ACoS as ad spend divided by attributed sales (Amazon Ads). The right number depends on each product's margin after Amazon's fees, which is why the fee math on our store management page comes first. Launch products can run above break-even on purpose, for a set period, with a written reason.

Choose the bidding strategy per campaign

Sponsored Products offers dynamic bids down only, dynamic bids up and down, and fixed bids. With up and down, Amazon can raise or lower a bid by up to 100% based on how likely a click is to convert (dynamic bidding guide). Placement adjustments for top of search, rest of search, and product pages go up to 900% (Sponsored Products best practices). New or unprofitable campaigns start on down only. Proven ones earn up and down, and top-of-search adjustments only where the placement report shows a better conversion rate.

Plan budgets by the month

Amazon treats the daily budget as an average across the calendar month, so a $100 daily budget can spend up to $3,000 in a 30-day month. We set budgets with that in mind and watch for campaigns that run out early in the day.

Ask Amazon Marketing Cloud the hard questions

AMC is a privacy-safe clean room, built on AWS Clean Rooms, that is free for eligible advertisers and self-service for sponsored ads advertisers. It offers no-code templates, SQL for custom analysis, and audiences you can use in sponsored ads, display, and video (Amazon Marketing Cloud). We use it for the questions below.

Tag every off-Amazon click

Amazon Attribution measures traffic you send from Google, Meta, or email. Enrolled US brand owners earn a Brand Referral Bonus averaging 10% of qualifying sales, credited against referral fees, and the bonus also counts the brand's other products bought within 14 days (Sell on Amazon).

The metrics we manage to, and the AMC questions we ask

Competition for these placements keeps rising. Amazon reported $19.8 billion in advertising services revenue for the second quarter of 2026, up 26% year over year (Amazon Q2 2026 results). Paying more per click only works if every target is tied to margin, so these are the four numbers we report.

Metric Formula How we use it
ACoS Ad spend ÷ ad-attributed sales Campaign and product efficiency against each product's break-even.
ROAS Ad-attributed sales ÷ ad spend (the inverse of ACoS) Comparing Amazon with Google and Meta in one report.
TACoS Ad spend ÷ total sales, including organic Whether advertising grows the business. Flat or falling TACoS while sales rise is healthy. Rising TACoS with flat sales means ads are replacing organic orders.
Break-even ACoS Margin before advertising ÷ price The ceiling for each product's target, set from the fee math.

Questions we answer in Amazon Marketing Cloud:

For the industry view, the IAB and Media Rating Council's retail media measurement guidelines set standards for attribution and incrementality that we hold Amazon's reports to. One platform change to know: Amazon's unified platform for sponsored ads and its DSP was renamed Amazon Ads Agent at unBoxed 2026, and its conversational experience for Sponsored Products is in closed beta (Amazon Ads). We review its recommendations the same way we review Google's: one at a time. Display and video buying is covered on our programmatic page.

Pricing and engagement

Amazon Ads management is a flat monthly fee, quoted after we've audited the ad account and built the product target sheet. It depends on catalog size, marketplaces, and ad types. Per the pricing page, nothing at Ahmeego is billed as a percentage of spend and there are no long contracts. Ad spend is billed by Amazon directly. If you also need listings and operations, we'll scope it with store management as one engagement.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good ACoS on Amazon?
There isn't one number. A good ACoS is below the product's break-even, which is its margin before advertising divided by its price. A high-margin product can be profitable at an ACoS that would lose money on a low-margin one.
What is TACoS?
Total advertising cost of sale: ad spend divided by total sales, including organic. It shows whether advertising is growing the business. Rising TACoS with flat sales means ads are replacing sales you'd have made anyway.
Should we use dynamic bids up and down?
On proven campaigns, often yes. Amazon can raise bids by up to 100% when a click looks likely to convert. On new or unprofitable campaigns we start with down only, and we never combine up and down with a large placement adjustment until the placement data supports it.
Is Amazon Marketing Cloud worth it for a mid-size brand?
Usually, because it's free for eligible advertisers and sponsored ads advertisers can access it self-service from the ads console. No-code templates cover common questions. SQL is only needed for custom analysis.
How is this different from your Amazon store management service?
This page covers advertising only: bidding, structure, targets, AMC, and attribution. Store management covers listings, Brand Registry, inventory, account health, and fees. Many brands need both, and we scope them together when they do.
Does Google or Meta traffic to Amazon count?
Yes, if you tag it with Amazon Attribution. Enrolled US brand owners also earn a Brand Referral Bonus averaging 10% of qualifying sales from that traffic, credited against referral fees.
Do you use Amazon's automated recommendations?
We review them. Some are useful, such as budget alerts on campaigns that run out early. Others mostly raise spend. Each one is accepted or dismissed against the product's target, not in bulk.
